The Roston Native Butterfly House was the first of its kind in the state. It features native pollinators and provides education about their lifecycles and importance to our ecosystem. Admission is free and education is provided by volunteer docents.

Touched by Butterflies Webinar

“Touched by Butterflies: Opportunities for Ecological Education” by Dr. Chris Barnhart, Roston Native Butterfly House Curator

Details: Butterflies are charismatic wildlife, and they present unique opportunities for public engagement ranging from classrooms to citizen science to landscape conservation efforts. The ecological importance of butterflies and moths relates to the host plant specificity of the larvae, for example the monarch dependence on milkweeds, and to the role of caterpillars as a primary food for birds and other wildlife. The interdependence of native plants, butterflies, and birds is a key argument for efforts to return native flora to urban and rural environments and to control invasive plants that displace natives.
