Join Friends of the Garden as we partner with Monarch Watch\, a research and conservation program\, to tag migratory monarchs.  From Springfield\, a Monarch can travel about 1\,600 miles to its overwintering site in Mexico. \nHelp local experts: tag a butterfly\, release it\, and receive the tag code and information from Monarch Watch so you can track if and when the butterfly is found! This hands-on program from the University of Kansas is a unique opportunity for all ages to learn about Monarchs\, their habitat\, life cycle and amazing migration. \nThe tagging of Monarchs has been used to confirm their migration from Canada and the United States to Mexico. It helps scientists determine the pathways\, or routes\, Monarchs take to reach Mexico. Tagging helps to unlock the mystery of how these tiny creatures navigate mountains\, forests\, streams and meadows to overwinter in the same several acres as their great\, great\, great grandparents. DESCRIPTION:The Springfield Orchid Society is a local group of orchid lovers. Members grow orchids on a scale as large as a thousand plants in a climate controlled 2000 sf greenhouse\, down to growers who have a few plants that thrive on window sills throughout their homes. \nWe meet monthly on the 3rd Tuesday at 7 pm at the South Side Senior Center\, 2215 South Fremont Ave in Springfield. \nOur area orchid growers will have their plants in the spectacular Springfield Orchid Society display. Other Midwest orchid societies from NW Arkansas\, Memphis\, Kansas City and St Louis are also expected to display as well. We should have over 250 orchid plants in bloom t9 view during the two day show. \nTwo commercial orchid vendors will have plants for sale to the public. This is an excellent opportunity to pick up a unique orchid plant you can’t find at the local box or grocery store. \nThere are always drawings for blooming orchid plants during the two days.\nThe Orchid Doctor will be there both days! Bring in your own orchid plant that needs repotting\, debugging or just some TLC. One of our members will be manning a table with potting supplies\, insecticides\, fertilizer\, etc. If the plant is beyond help\, we may be able to send you home with a replacement! \nQuestions?
